So as it turns out, watching television is America’s favorite and only pastime, but there is a certain type of TV that really grips the throats of Americans and that is watching rich white people become distressed. Big Little Lies, The Undoing, Little Fires Everywhere. It’s all here right in front of us, and Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman just won’t let us forget it. The way that Reese is able to be this caring white mother while also conniving and vindictive is extremely accurate of most suburban mothers. The way that Nicole Kidman speaks American english like some kind of Welsh refugee is impeccable. The way they grip their wine glasses as they gaze upon the stars, contemplating their life’s choices is exactly what it takes to produce high quality, entertaining television, especially in this era of the pandemic.

It’s not lost on me that many of us dream of one day being out in the world freely once again, but while we’re spending so much time at home, it’s not a bad idea to get your shawl and wine glass and pretend like you are a distressed white lady. At least in this scenario your pandemic life is paid for and you have a husband that keeps the fridge stocked. Go stare longingly out the back window where the beach waves crash and the salty air blows through your hair. You are Reese, girl. Now go cheat on your husband or something.
