Local Indian Mom Hopes Her Children Will Be Like Kamala, Except for the Interracial Marriage Part

Pass the bar before you even think about laying eyes on that white girl.

Yet another Indian mom, Amita Patel, found herself skirting around the subject of interracial marriage when all she wanted to do was highlight how her son’s life achievements paled in comparison to Vice President Kamala Harris.

“Of course before Kamala Harris became the first Black, Asian, and female VP, she attended a very good university, even interned for a California Senator in undergrad and was the leader of the debate team!” exclaimed Amita on the phone, “Kamala is a daughter of the soil!”

Unbeknownst to her, Amita’s son Vivek is currently in an interracial relationship himself. He saw an opportunity in the conversation to test the waters and took it.

“Hey mom,” he said tentatively as she put down the phone. “Does your unwavering, unrelenting praise of Kamala mean you’re okay with interracial marriage because she’s in one and is a product of one?”

Amita paused briefly to let out an exasperated sigh and continued speaking about Shyamala Gopalan Harris, the Vice President’s mother.

“Shyamala and I are like cousins who grew up together. Same upbringing, same culture, we even had the same saris — we’re literally cut from the same cloth! Obviously, we also had the same dreams for our children. But somehow she was successful and it seems I have failed so far.”

Amita has never had any contact with Shyamala Gopalan Harris.

“So you’re okay with Shyamala Gopalan coming to America to study and then meeting and marrying someone outside her own race?” questioned Vivek who was in denial about his mother being in denial.

Amita, finding yet another way to change the subject and put Vivek down, simply responded.

“Gandhi, before he went to study abroad, promised to his mother that he would not eat meat or drink alcohol and that he would only look upon other women as his mother or sister. Now, I think it’s too late for you to be like Gandhi. However, he was already an accomplished lawyer at your age. Do you know who else was a lawyer at your age? Kamala. He brought the whole country independence just like Kamala will bring independence and peace to America. I just hope you can be financially independent some day.”

Despite the futile conversation, Vivek’s low expectations were satisfied by the mere idea of his mother overlooking an interracial marriage for him, as long as he does eventually pass the LSATs. That feeling was short-lived as he later received a WhatsApp forward from his mother about the perils of Love Jihad.
