Cassandra “Cassie” Lee had always been the perfect daughter for her demanding, tough love Chinese mother, Huang Lee. Naturally, when she went to bed on the eve of her 26th birthday as a single, financial consultant at Deloitte, she woke up the next morning as a stay-at-home mother of five with a sixth on the way.
When questioned how this sudden transformation occurred, Lee replied, “Mom always pushed me to do well in school, make a lot of money, and never pursue a relationship with a man beyond eye contact. But obviously this all changed the second I turned 26 and she realized she needed more children to neg on from birth. Now, my will is my husband’s and my five bundles of joy!” She then called her mother to tell her the news, to which Huang only replied, “Expected.”
This all came as a shock to Lee’s 2-year roommate, Abbey Heath, who had never seen her dating men in their time living together. “Cassie has never even mentioned a guy’s name to me, much less brought one home in the last two years,” Heath reported while wrestling with two crying newborns, “I literally asked Cassie yesterday night when she last had sex and she asked me what that was. Now, she’s 6 months pregnant, knows how to cook braised pork belly, and I have to keep her twins Lucas and Maria from knocking over my wilting ficus.”
We tried to question Lee’s new husband, Harold Yang, but he had already started his journey of Chinese fatherhood by remaining silently aloof.
