Rachel Delaver never expected to be extraordinary. It was just another commute to the office, a podcast droning in the speakers of her car. One moment, My Favorite Murder’s Karen Kilagariff was telling the story of a mother who killed her two kids in a hot tub, and the next, her tired exploded.

“I was scared, but I also wasn’t?” Delaver explains, dazed from the day’s events. “I have rich parents, so it’s kinda like, how bad could it be?”

Delaver quickly pulled over on the side of the beltway, thinking fast. The only natural next step was to call her Dad, who’d think faster.

“Dad, Dad!!” Delaver’s panicked voice echoed sharply through her iPhone 12X Max. “I’m not moving.”

“Ok.” Mr. Delaver’s voice was silky, confident; business-like.

“You don’t get it. I’m on I-95 and I’m not moving. I’m backing up three lanes of traffic and a lot of people have said some extremely rude things to me.” Delaver sniffed.

“Rachel, sweetie, go into your phone’s notes application and listen carefully. If it’s an issue with the battery, that means your car needs to be jumped. If it’s an air pressure issue, you likely have a flat tire. If it’s because your car’s engine is short circuiting, well then, sweetie, you wouldn’t be awake right now.”

Rachel gasped.

“Anyway, the former two issues can be solved quickly and decisively with a call to triple A. A quick google search will give you their number. I gotta go now, we’re about to land on Mars.” And before Delaver could utter a word of thanks, he was gone.

Delavor followed his instructions dutifully, getting as far as a phone call with triple A. However, things went awry.

“I knew about Triple A” Delaver says sheepishly. “But I can’t imagine batteries would be useful in this situation, right? Unless we plugged one in the hole of the tire.”

Rachel dialed back her father – who answered on the third ring.

“SWEETIE…HONEYBUN, YOUR FATHER IS EXPERIENCING TRIPLE Gs RIGHT NOW, CAN I CALL YOU BACK IN 5??”

“No! Just tell me who else to call! Triple A was a dud.”

Mr. Delavor gasped out, “Your mother…call you your mother…” his breaths even raspier as he said “I gave her instructions…on what to do….if something happened to me..”

“Okay!” Rachel Delavor cheerfully hung up the phone on her father’s dying breath. They never made it to Mars. Rachel’s 2020 BMW is still there on the side I-95, preserved forever.
