In a rare bipartisan vote on Thursday, the Senate passed a bill condemning Asian hate crimes. It passed with a vote of 94-1, with Missouri Senator, Josh Hawley, as the lone voter in opposition.
“It’s too broad,” asserts Hawley. “It doesn’t mention which Asians are ok to hate,” he continued. “East Asians and South Asians aren’t the same – do we stop hating them all?” he asked in a culturally aware but still racist question.
The bill is in response to a sharp rise in hate crimes towards Asian Americans and aims to help identify hate crimes against all minorities.
“WE CAN’T BE THE SPEECH POLICE,” further argued Hawley. This bolsters his record of only supporting police who actively harm minorities.
