Formerly known as Rachel Dolezal, Rachel Kim speaks out about her recent transition to Koreanhood. Kim is most known for her controversy around race and political activism where she self-identified as African American even though both of her parents were white. When asked to comment, she said, “I was using skin toning products to look darker but then I discovered the K-beauty product Cicapair Tiger Grass Color Correcting Treatment by Dr. Jart. It did wonders for my skin, and I have been obsessed ever since.”
According to Kim, carrying a scholar stone, binge watching two hours of BTS fan videos and 40 minutes of K-dramas is apparently enough to be Korean American in her eyes. However, Kim states that she is like any other Korean, and her favorite K-drama is all of them. “Yeah, being Black just wasn’t that interesting anymore, and these K-dramas were so captivating. I don’t know what they’re saying, so I just make up my own story in my head, and it’s pretty good. If I was a writer though, I would have the characters eat somewhere other than Subway” says Kim.
However, this transition has not been met with Korean hearts as some have criticized Kim similarly to how the African American community treated her when she identified as Black. In her response she states, “I have been Korean my whole life. My father, mother, brother, sister, and I grew up very poor in a semi-basement apartment within the lower class part of Seoul. Thankfully, my brother helped us find work for a rich family but then things got crazy at a birthday party that was hosted by the homeowner for their son. If you were to meet my family, then you would understand that I am fully Korean. Sure, my father is trapped in that homeowner’s basement, my brother has severe brain damage, and my sister is dead, but mom and I are doing fine.” Before we could ask anymore questions, Kim quickly asked me to leave stating that she needed privacy to learn morse code.
