Opinion: My Ungrateful Granddaughter Won’t Drop Everything in Her Life to Travel Back to India to Say Hi

“When did my sweet little grandchild become such a raging bitch?”

How could this happen to me? I was there the day she was born. I cradled her in my arms when she couldn’t even open her eyes and I always rounded out her roti when she handed me a blob of flattened dough. But now, on a random summer weekday, I learned that sweet little child transformed into a raging bitch who doesn’t want anything to do with me.

I am the considerate one here. I waited until 11 a.m., which everyone knows is the best time to call because no one is ever busy at that time, to start up a lengthy conversation with her. But apparently she’s too busy preparing a “keynote” for her “actuarial consultant” job. What kind of made-up bullshit is that? Just say you hate me next time.

And then when I ask her about coming to India to visit me, she half-heartedly laughs and says maybe. Yeah okay, where have I heard that before. Oh, that’s right! It’s what she said the last time I called her 6 hours ago. I really didn’t want to pull out the ol’ guilt trip maneuver but she’s left me with no other option.

Sure, she’s busy with her career, personal relationships, finance, and hobbies, but I’m dying. (Eventually.) Not really sure when, I’m actually very healthy right now, but it’s bound to happen some time. You wouldn’t let your grandma die alone, would you? It’d be a shame for your nicer brother to receive all my money in the will.
