Shame and tragedy struck the Lee household last week when 67-year-old Hyungmin’s birthday party took a sour turn. “You always hear about this kind of stuff on the news… you never think it could happen under your own roof,” he says.

According to several eyewitness accounts, the incident happened around 9 pm as festivities were winding down. Amidst the chaos of relatives insisting on doing the dishes, the eldest auntie, Kyunghee, approached 14-year-old Kevin with a crisp $50 bill. “I might have said something about how well he’s been doing in school,” she placed the furtive bill in his hands, “then he just kinda… took it.” She continues, “there was no resistance. He pretty much snatched it from my hand.” An awkward silence followed and guests shuffled out soon afterward. The party was definitely over now. “My heart dropped,” writes Sooyoung, Kevin’s mother, in a distressed email.  Yet, that was only the second worst thing to befall her that evening: “no one asked to take some of my kimchi home with them.”

According to our sources, Kevin has already spent all the money on boba and V-Bucks. In response to the incident, he’s quoted saying “he didn’t think it would be such a big deal.” We wish the Lee family strength through these difficult times.
